YOLO!

YOLO is a phrase that dates back to the 1700’s, but was brought back by the rapper Drake. I first came to know Drake when he played a dorky kid in a wheelchair in Degrassi the next generation. YOLO also popped up recently as part of the #IfIwere22 Linkedin Campaign.

YOLO and ILY are all abbreviations of already popular phrases that really mean the same thing as they did before the acronym. This is the perfect example of the evolution of language – people were saying “you only live once” and “I love you” long before they ever even thought about making them into the acronyms YOLO and ILY. These aren’t revolutionary words or ideas, just the evolution of a phrase to an acronym. Things don’t really change, status don’t changes, but who we are, evolves. As a 22 year old, I’m the exact same person I was at 18, but I’ve evolved to the point where sometimes my 18-year-old self feels like a stranger.

We have a motto of our own here at OpenCRM, you will hear most of us say it: Evolution versus Revolution. We want to be able to help a company evolve with our system, not make them revolutionise their ways.

I like to recommend that our Cloud based CRM be used and learnt, but also give our customers the opportunity to evolve their business practices alongside our evolution as a system, which in turn is driven by our customers’ needs. The same way people didn’t stop talking about only living once with the rise of YOLO, they just talked about it using a different word.

There is no sense re-inventing the wheel, we just need to learn to speak the same language.
